Liz studied fine art and theatre design in her native Canada before moving to London 20 years ago to pursue a career in theatrical propmaking. After many years working in the props business she decided it was time to return to drawing and re-engaging with the art world, and completed an MA in Drawing at Camberwell College of Art. The resulting large-scale charcoal and graphite drawings of the surface water of the Thames are a departure from the brightly coloured pastel drawings Liz used to make in her spare time. The monochromatic studies of frozen fluidity are based on photos taken from a water-level perspective while kayaking and walking along the river.
Liz remains drawn to the river for subject matter, its reflective surface the source of infinite patterning, its relentless movement symbolic of continuity as well as perpetual change. |
